Change Your Life Write Now: Summer Creative Writing Program in Spain
May 31-June 26, 2013. Apply by March 15
Study and practice creative writing on the Mediterranean coast in Spain. This program, sponsored by the University of Memphis, offers participants a culturally fascinating and highly educational stay in Alicante during the season of the city’s fiesta of San Juan. Participants will have an immersion experience, will live with Spanish families (knowledge of Spanish is not required), and will write original creative works (poetry, fiction, and/or creative non-fiction) based on culturally significant readings; walking tours of area villages and archeological sites; experiences of the fiesta; and visits to art museums in Madrid, sites in Valencia, and the island of Tabarca (snorkeling optional). Options for additional trips to Barcelona and Granada exist, as well as for study of Spanish language. Previous years’ students came from graduate and undergraduate programs across the United States, and some described the trip as life changing. This is an excellent program for graduate or undergraduate credit.
The program cost is $2,100* and includes the $350 study abroad application fee, accommodations, meals, travel on field trips, and Student ID card. The program fee does not include international travel, tuition, medical insurance, or personal expenses. Tuition (3 credit hours) is approximately $1050 for undergraduate credit and $1450 for graduate. Non-degree seeking participants may also audit the course for non-credit at the undergraduate rate. Non-University of Memphis participants pay an additional $150 fee, but pay only the in-state tuition rate no matter where they’re from.
The course is taught by Dr. John Bensko, who won the Yale Series of Younger Poets Award for his first book, Green Soldiers. He has published two more volumes of poetry and a collection of short stories. His awards include a Fulbright Professorship in American Literature at the Universidad de Alicante. He is a regular member of the MFA creative writing faculty at the University of Memphis.
