Lilian Calles Barger, a doctoral candidate in Humanities—History of Ideas, has been awarded a 2013-14 Dissertation Fellowship by the American Association of University Women. The Fellowship will support Ms. Barger for the coming academic year as she completes work on her dissertation, Human Liberation From Below: Transnational Origins of Liberation Theology, 1775-1975.
AAUW Dissertation Fellowships are highly prestigious, and the selection process is rigorous and quite competitive. Candidates are evaluated on the basis of scholarly excellence; quality and originality of project design; and active commitment to helping women and girls through service in their communities, professions, or fields of research. To my knowledge, Ms. Barger is the first UT Dallas doctoral student ever to be awarded a AAUW Dissertation Fellowship.
